Bladder Infection Treatment

Treating Pain & Irritation for Fast Relief

If you have experienced bladder infections in the past, you understand how painful this type of urinary tract infection (UTI) can be. A bladder infection may make you feel like you constantly need to use the bathroom and will cause a burning or stinging sensation when you do. You may also experience cloudy, bloody, or foul-smelling urine, pelvic pain, and fever. These symptoms are caused by an illness called cystitis, which is the specific type of UTI that occurs when the bladder is infected.

What Causes a Bladder Infection?

Most often, E. coli bacteria are to blame for a bladder infection. Because women’s urethras are shorter than men’s, bacteria can more easily reach the bladder and cause an infection. As a result, women experience bladder infections far more often than men.

Women are particularly susceptible to infection after the following activities:

  • Inserting a tampon
  • Having sex
  • Using a diaphragm
  • Wiping from back to front after using the restroom

Though women are at higher risk, men may also experience bladder infections. Prostate infections are the most common cause of bladder infections in men, but bladder stones and enlarged prostates may also be the culprit.

Treatment

When you visit Jupiter Medical Center Urgent Care, our medical providers will perform a physical exam and a urine analysis, if necessary. We will work with you to determine the exact cause of the infection, or if there may be more serious medical issues behind the issue.

If your bladder does not recover within a few days, we can prescribe antibiotics that will clear up the infection. Though many bladder infections do not cause further complications, it is important to seek professional advice to determine the cause. We encourage you to visit one of our centers in Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, or West Palm Beach if you believe you or a loved one has a bladder infection, especially if the pain is particularly bad or if you have experienced several infections in a short time span.
