Mild Fevers
Treatment for Fevers
Increased body temperature is a sign that your body is working to fight off an infection, but fevers can be extremely uncomfortable. In adults, a fever is considered mild if your body temperature is between 100 and 103 degrees. For young children, a fever above 100.4 could be a sign of infection or other health problems.
In addition to increased body temperature, symptoms of a fever include:
- Headache
- Chills
- Aches and pains in muscles
- Feeling faint or lightheaded
- Flushed skin
If you suspect that your child has a fever, take their oral, rectal, or auxiliary temperature immediately with a digital thermometer. Take note of any other symptoms they are experiencing, too.
Should I Treat a Mild Fever?
Handling a fever in an adult can be tricky – most mild fevers are actually a good thing. It is sometimes unwise to attempt to treat a mild fever, as this could halt your body’s fight against bacteria or viruses. However, visiting our center may be helpful as a medical professional will be able to determine if there is a larger problem requiring treatment.
You should visit us for a fever if:
- You have had a fever for more than three days
- Your temperature has reached 103°F
- You have fainted or feel like you will faint
- You are having chest pains
